According to NJ Transit spokesman Kyalo Mulumba, at approximately 5:31 p.m. on March 5, North Jersey Coast Line train 3363—which departed New York Penn Station at 5:01 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Bay Head at 7:07 p.m.—struck and fatally injured a trespasser at Elizabeth Station.
There were no reported injuries to the approximately 1,100 passengers or crew members aboard the train, Mulumba said.
As a result, Northeast Corridor service was temporarily suspended between Trenton and Newark, while North Jersey Coast Line service was halted between Newark and Long Branch. Service has since been restored on both lines, NJ Transit said.
While service is back, trains in and out of Penn Station New York remain subject to delays of up to two hours due to weather-related power issues in one of Amtrak’s Hudson River Tunnels, officials said.
To assist commuters, NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by:
- NJ Transit buses
- Private carriers
- PATH service at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken, and New York 33rd Street
NJ Transit Police are actively investigating the fatal incident at Elizabeth Station.
Passengers are encouraged to check NJ Transit’s website for alternate service options and real-time updates.
